Hong went away on a business trip for a few days, so it’s just me and the kids for the next few days. This is the first time she’s left the kids overnight, so it’ll remain to be seen how they do without her. Today went just fine; kids didn’t seem to miss mom too much, although Oliver’s words while being put to bed were “ma ma” over and over again. Even though I’m usually the one to rock him to sleep, he knows ma is missing.

I’ve got a friend of mine helping out for the evenings, so it’s not exactly like being a single dad. Just two more nights to go.

Yesterday marked a milestone in Hong’s life as she officially became a US Citizen. Now she can vote and is allowed to apply for government jobs. We also will get wait together in the slow line next time we pass through customs at the Beijing airport.

Yes, the benefits aren’t significant, but it’s the culmination of a long journey for her. We’ll celebrate an especially significant Independence Day this year.
