From looking at the 2005 schedule for the XTech Conference, I don’t think there’s a single time-slot where there isn’t at least one talk being presented that I would be interested in. I’d be there of my own volition if only
- it didn’t cost $1000 to register, and
- it wasn’t being held in Amsterdam.
(Not that I have anything against Amsterdam per se, it’s just a long trip to take for an “optional” conference.)

Dell Rumors provides a tongue-in-cheek report of new machines coming from Dell in much the same way that Mac Rumors covers the Mac market.

It’s been six months since our daughter was born. What fun she’s turned out to be!

I arrived home on Friday morning via a red-eye flight. I remained groggy for most of the day, taking in an afternoon nap, and otherwise not doing much of anything. It was good to get away from family responsibilities for a few days but it’s good to be back too.
It’s amazing to see how much Maggie has changed while I was away. She learned to sit up on her own, eats solid food from a spoon with no fuss, and can grab onto my fingers and pull herself to her feet as I lift my hands. Absolutely amazing. Oh, and she babbles a lot saying “da da da day day day”. Hong has been trying to get her to say “ma ma” to no avail.
Since I was away on Valentine’s Day, and my mom was still around, Hong and I went out to Peterson’s for a nice dinner. In case you’re wondering, the steak was superb (Hong claimed it was the best she’s had, better than Ruths Chris and St. Elmo’s), but the seafood was lacking. Not like anyone’s expecting great seafood in landlocked Indianapolis.
Speaking of seafood, I was expecting to get some good seafood while in San Francisco, but never got the chance. One of the guys suggested we could go to Red Lobster. Red Lobster! In San Francisco! Well, we didn’t even go there, as most people were so tired after the training sessions that we opted for something within walking distance. Next time, I’m taking the Bart to Fisherman’s Wharf alone if I have to.

I’m in California right now, attending a training session for work. So far, it’s been real nice. No delays in my flight here, the hotel room is super nice, and the training so far has been top-notch.
Unfortunately, it has meant leaving my wife and baby behind at home. To help things out, my mother flew in from Colorado to stay with them while I’m gone. I think it’s worked out for both parties — my wife gets some extra help, and my mom gets to spend time with her granddaughter.

In response to the old picture of Bill Gates posing on his tesk (purported for Teen Beat magazine but later proved otherwise), Nat Friedman posted these pictures of Miguel doing the heartthrob thing: One, Two, Three.
You know, it would be fun to get other software luminaries to join in similar photo shoots. But as a word to RMS, please keep your shirt on.

Today is the Chinese New Year holiday, welcoming in the Year of the Rooster. If you go to a Chinese restaurant where they have the antiquated placemats showing the twelve different animals in the Chinese zodiac, they sometimes refer to this as the Year of the Cock, but for obvious reasons it’s not really referred to by that name any more.
The previous year, the Year of the Monkey, has obviously been very good for us, with the birth of our monkey. We’ve managed to collect lots of monkey-related toys and decorations for her, although you’d be surprised how difficult monkey-related nursery decorations are to find. I’m glad she wasn’t born in the Year of the Rooster, because trying to find a stuffed rooster would be much more difficult.
Oh, and it was also Mardi Gras yesterday, so happy Mardi Gras. I’m so out of it, I didn’t even realize it was Mardi Gras until I read a news article about it. Didn’t even get out my beads this year. Then again, considering I didn’t know when the Super Bowl was, this shouldn’t be surprising.

Wow. Google Maps has a slick interface for showing maps, and the graphics are much improved over MapQuest. It reminds me exactly how old MapQuest is (probably close to 10 years, by my reckoning), and that the quality of their maps has hardly changed at all during that entire time.
