This land isn’t your land

From the Electronic Frontier Foundation comes this story about how the creators of the “This Land” parody (which my mother originally forwarded to me) is being sued by the current owners of the copyright. Especially interesting is one of the copyright messages Woody Guthrie wrote on one of his songs:

“This song is Copyrighted in U.S., under Seal of Copyright # 154085, for a period of 28 years, and anybody caught singin it without our permission, will be mighty good friends of ourn, cause we don’t give a dern. Publish it. Write it. Sing it. Swing to it. Yodel it. We wrote it, that’s all we wanted to do.”

Musical preferences for people in computing

According to the results in a poll regarding musical preferences by IT professionals, I most fit the profile of a Linux Developer. Oh, wait, I am! In fact, according to these results, I could be just about anything except for a MSDE or a database administrator.

How YOUR civil liberties are being eroded

Check out Brown Equals Terrorist for one brown man’s run-in with federal agents after he takes pictures of the Seattle-area Ballard Locks for his photography class.

This, along with news that 400,000 truckers are being recruited to report “suspicious activity” (a.k.a people wearing turbans), makes this country sound more like Orwell’s 1984 every day.

Making me root for John Kerry

Reason Online has an article entitled Ten Reasons to Fire George W. Bush which pretty much sums up my feelings. Number 10 on the list seems especially true for me, and I’ve come to the conclusion that once again, I can’t vote for either candidate in good conscience. I’m casting my vote for Michael Badnarik.

I’m in the process of migrating my photo albums to a new piece of software I’ve written. The links in the sidebar are pointing to the correct place, but all my links within my journal entries will be temporarily broken.

Netflix moves to Indianapolis

We’ve been subscribers to NetFlix for about a year-and-a-half so far, and have been immensely pleased with the service. We can usually get turnaround on DVDs in about a week, since the closest distribution center was in Michigan.

Today, I found out that they’ve apparently opened up a new distribution center right here in town, as our mailing labels now have an Indianapolis address on them. I sent back a movie yesterday and they’re already sending me a new one today. Amazing!

Alas, with a baby on the way, we figure we’ll have to discontinue the service soon. We expect that any free time we have after she arrives will be spent catching up on sleep.
