Jury Duty…denied!

Posted in General | No Comments »

I was supposed to serve jury duty today for the first time in my life, but when I called to check on my status last night, I found out the trial had been cancelled. I don’t know whether to be happy or disappointed.

Mozilla Web Authoring Tools

Posted in Web Authoring | 2 Comments »

Came across a couple of very nice tools for Mozilla/Netscape which should be very useful to me as a developer.

  1. The pnhtoolbar adds a handy toolbar to your screen that offers inline W3C page tests, ability to show cookies used on the current page, toggle outlining of table cells, and more. This will make me more likely to validate my pages. This weblog does not currently pass the W3C tests. 8-(
  2. Livehttpheaders adds a “Headers” tab to the “View Page Info” box, letting you see what information you’re sending to the server and what meta-information the server is sending back. I used to use Rex Swain’s HTTP Viewer to be able to sniff what web server sites were running on, but this tool makes that obsolete.

Believe me, I am very excited about these tools. Too excited, really.

Might as well call this GeekLog

Apologies to my geek-impaired friends if too many of my entries seem to be rather computer-centric in nature, but hey, outside of bicycling, yard work, and quality time with my sweetie, there’s not much else going on in my life!

My latest side project has been to write web-based photo album software. My current photo album software is a custom-modified version of PHPix..it’s functional, but doesn’t offer a lot of features. Plus, it’s written in PHP, an entirely usable web language but lacking elegance. I’ve really wanted to write my own in another language, partly as an exercise, but also something which would really show off my HTML/CSS/Javascript skills.

Democracy Whiskey Sexy

Posted in General | No Comments »

I know I’m a bit behind the curve sometimes, but just today I came across the Democracy, Whiskey, Sexy story. Knowing how much Americans love to laugh at foreigners mis-speaking English (to wit, All Your Base Are Belong To Us, Mahir’s I KISS YOU page, and Engrish.com), I’m surprised I haven’t heard the reference yet. I did wonder, though, if someone had thought to register a domain name.

Sure enough…

The dullest weblog in the world. And you thought this blog was boring!

Why bother leaving your computer to brush your teeth when one of these USB-powered toothbrushes from Japan will let you brush in front of your computer? Yeah!

Hard drive fiasco…and surprise

Posted in General | No Comments »

On Tuesday, I booted up my computer at home to find that one of my hard drives, the one with all of my Linux partitions, wouldn’t spin up. This happened once before, but some shaking of the device seemed to make everything all right. Not this time. I tried for about an hour to get it to spin up with no luck. The drive was a previously used 9GB SCSI drive bought off of Ebay for $40. I suppose I should have known better.

So on Wednesday morning, I ordered a new hard drive from Amazon.com. (No more used drives for me!) Rather than opt for the free super-saver shipping, which they advertise as being slower than regular paid-for shipping, I decided to pay for it. Not overnight shipping, just good ol’ regular shipping. I figured if I’m lucky, I’ll see it by next Monday.

But lo and behold, I found it sitting on my doorstep on Thursday! I was astounded. That’s practically as good as overnight shipping. I’m guessing that nowadays, most Amazon customers opt for the free shipping, and customers who do pay get moved to the front of the processing queue, because they had it out of the door just a few hours after I placed my order. Having seen the size of their operations, this is nothing short of amazing.

It’s things like that that give Amazon.com the highest customer satisfaction index of any company, not just in retail but over all categories.

Japanese kids learn about war

Posted in General | No Comments »

This Kodomo News segment seems to be teaching Japanese kids about the current U.S./Iraq conflict with cute pictures and figures. Of course, knowing about Japan’s penchant for cute things, this could just as easily be the evening news for all I can tell.

Elkhart, Indiana: 1, Terrorists: 0

Abdul, we must call off our planned attack on Elkhart, Indiana. The Woodlawn Homeland Security Agency would surely find us.

The group sounds like a well-prepared neighborhood watch group, although the name “Woodlawn Homeland Security” is a bit too much. If they can reduce crime in their own neighborhood, though, more power to them.
