Snowed In!

Posted in General | 1 Comment »

This weekend, we received eight inches of snow. Since it was the weekend, it wasn’t too bad since we got to stay home all day and have fun together. However, at one point we had to go to the grocery store, and you see me here trying to dig out our driveway with a rake. (No, I haven’t bought a snow shovel yet, although now I reckon I should.) We received more snow overnight, and the snowplow graciously pushed the snow and ice from the road in front of our driveway, so I had to repeat the process today. My back’s a little sore this morning.

Meanwhile, some places have gotten as much as two feet of snow from the same storm. I’m such a wimp.

Cities with Culture

While following this discussion thread on Plastic, I realized why I fell in love with Seattle so quickly and continue to dislike Indianapolis: it’s the culture. Or, more to the point, the lack of it where I currently live.

Many of our more prominent cities have culture: New York, Boston, Philadelphia, Chicago, Miami, Atlanta, Dallas, Denver, San Francisco, and Seattle are mentioned in the thread. Personally, I’m skeptical of a few on that list (particularly Dallas and Atlanta, which I always thought were mega-sprawls, not bastions of culture), but I can accept the others. I’d add New Orleans to the list as well; as much as I’ve complained about the city of New Orleans, I have a lot of fond memories surrounding things very unique to the city.

So, what other cities have that unique flavor that make them desirable to live in?

Stupid Computer Tricks shows some photos of computers brought in for repair to a moo-cow computer company. Some are understandable, others incomprehensible, like the credit cards in the floppy drive.

It’s for the best that Dell (and presumably other computer manufacturers) will soon stop including floppy drives in its default configurations. Just one less slot for lusers to stick things into.

Pages for kids

Jfew points to 7h1s k3wl b33f page put out by the Cattlemen’s Beef Board. Frankly, I’m having a hard time imagining Jebediah from the ranch “keeping it real” with IM-oriented teenage girls.

Meanwhile, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms has a kids page. Yeah, there’s one government agency that could use a budget cut.

Year of the Sheep

Hong and I celebrated the Chinese New Year this past weekend by serving as emcees at a party hosted by the Indiana Association of Chinese-Americans and the local chapter of Families with Children from China. Originally, I was supposed to emcee in English and Hong would translate into Chinese, but it was shortly apparent that everyone knew English anyway, so towards the end it was just me up there.

There are pictures of me in my silk Chinese shirt, but they’re on the film camera, so I need to wait until that roll gets developed before I can post them. The frustrations of lo-tech!
