Google does not display pop-up advertising. Here’s why. From the page:

Google does not allow pop-up ads of any kind on our site. We find them annoying.

I love Google!

When Seiferts Go Bad: Apparently

When Seiferts Go Bad: Apparently I’m not the only Seifert in Fishers, as Brian Seifert was in the news for reporting a false terrorist threat. My only question is, why would someone do that?

Making use of the fireplace

We made a fire in the fireplace tonight which came out pretty well. We tried one about two months ago but it wasn’t so hot (pun intended). This one came out just right, thanks to Hong’s fire-tending skills.

Hexley

While Linux has its penguin and BSD its daemon, apparently the Darwin kernel has Hexley. Hexley is a platypus wearing a daemon hat and carrying the daemon pitchfork, a nod to its BSD roots.

Finally got OS X working

Finally got OS X working for me late last night, as I had to download three patches to get the modem to work. My initial impressions are that I’m quite impressed with the visual layout, but so far less than impressed with the overall performance. It’s definitely much slower than my Linux setup (despite boosting my system memory from 128MB to 256MB), and the lack of keyboard shortcuts is driving me batty (although I should be able to use AppleScript to help me here as well.)

My greatest complaint, though, is having to wade through tons of crappy Shareware and Demoware to find Free applications. I guess it’s something I took for granted that everything available for Linux was provided without strings attached, at least as far as using the software was concerned. Hopefully I can find a good resource for Free OS X software that doesn’t list Shareware or Demoware.

My copy of Mac OS

My copy of Mac OS X just arrived in the mail today. I’m ditching Linux on my iMac for the time being, namely because support for it is pretty weak (Linux on x86 is MUCH better). If I had more hard drive space, I’d keep a Linux partition around, if only to be able to play some of the video games I’ve bought for it. If that happened, I’d probably be the only person in the world who boots INTO Linux to play games.

Jeff Few suggests that I take a look at Movable Type if I want to switch blogging engines. Another Hmmm… to add to the considerations.

Hey, whaddya know… Amazon.com posted a profit for the 4Q, and it’s a real profit, not just a pro forma one.

Meanwhile, my buddy Mark Hershberger

Meanwhile, my buddy Mark Hershberger wrote an Emacs interface to Blogger which uses xml-rpc.el. This does all the processing in Emacs, as opposed to another Emacs interface which works by calling a Perl program to do the actual processing.

Boy oh boy… This tool

Boy oh boy… This tool (screenshot only) makes me almost want to ditch my custom weblog software and go with Blogger instead. Being able to perform updates to my weblog from any webpage would be totally sweet. So ditch my software, or make my software support the Blogger API. Hmm, tough choice.
